For marine environments, silver plated bolts are not used for Stainless Steel 446 Slatting Coils, as silver bonds easily with chlorine in this environment. In the case of red fuming nitric acid for Stainless Steel 446 Perforated Coils, the problem is limited to environments containing less than water, or more than NO2. Failure in 446 Stainless Steel Sheets has occurred when oxygen and chlorides were present as impurities. 446 Stainless Steel Plates provides the best combination of strength and toughness of the commercially available titanium alloys. The strength of 446 Stainless Steel Coils permits about a 27 % weight savings when compared to SS 309. Solution treated and aged SS 446 Sheets possesses excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, typically being greater. Solution treated SS 446 Plates should not be subject to long term exposure in the 500 Degree F – 800 Degree F range, where this could result in high strength but low ductility. For lower strength, overage these SS 446 Coils in the 950 Degree F – 1150 Degree F range.
